The Hiring Panel
XXXX Company
Brisbane, QLD
Dear Hiring Panel,
I would like to express my interest in the Team Leader, Customer Operations position advertised internally. I have worked in the Customer Operations team at XXXX Company for three years as a Senior Customer Service Officer, and I am keen to take the next step and help lead a team I know well.
In my current role I train new starters, handle escalated complaints and act as team leader during leave. Over the past year I helped introduce a shared knowledge base that reduced repeat enquiries, and I coordinated the roster through our busiest quarter. Because I already know our systems, customers and colleagues, I could contribute from day one while bringing a fresh perspective to how the team works.
I have let my manager know about my application, and I would welcome the chance to discuss the role and how I could contribute in it. Thank you for considering my expression of interest.
Kind regards,
Amelia Chen

Pair your cover letter with a matching resume, then apply and follow up.

See the resume →Ask your manager for feedback — general, after a project, or before probation or a review.
Open the tool →Create a polite follow-up message after applying for a role.
Open the tool →Answer government and public-sector selection criteria using the STAR method, with worked examples.
Read the guide →Run through this before you send your resume — the basics, tailoring, Australian conventions and a final check.
Open the checklist →Usually yes, unless the application says otherwise. A short internal cover letter or expression of interest shows the panel why you want the role and what you would bring, and it treats the process as seriously as an external application.
An expression of interest (EOI) is a short letter telling the organisation you would like to be considered for a role, secondment or acting opportunity. It is common in Australian government, health and education workplaces. Follow any instructions in the EOI notice, such as a word limit or criteria to address.
In most workplaces it is best to tell your manager before or as you apply, so they don't hear it from someone else. Many internal processes involve your manager anyway, for example as a referee.
You can refer to internal projects, systems and results the panel will recognise, and explain why you want to grow within the organisation. Keep it just as clear and professional as an external letter, and don't rely on the panel already knowing your work.
