Your details
These go at the top of the letter.
The role
Who you’re writing to. If you don’t have a name, “The Hiring Manager” is fine.
Body paragraphs
One box per paragraph. Aim for three: why you’re writing, why you’re a fit, and a close asking for an interview.
Sign-off
Your name is added automatically under the sign-off.
How to write a cover letter that gets read
A good cover letter is short and specific. Open by naming the exact role and one honest reason you want it. Use the middle paragraph to connect your experience to what the ad actually asks for — pick the one or two things that matter most rather than repeating your whole resume. Close by asking for an interview and thanking them.
Keep it to one page, address a real person if you can, and match the wording of the job ad where it genuinely fits. When you’re done, pair it with a resume built in our free resume builder, run that resume through the free ATS resume checker, and read the full resume and cover letter guide if you want more detail. Frequently asked questions
Is this cover letter builder really free?
Yes. You can write your cover letter and download it as a Word document or PDF without paying, signing up, or entering an email address. There is no trial and no paywall at the download step.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no login and no email required. Fill in the fields and download the file.
Is my information uploaded or stored?
No. The letter is built entirely in your browser and your details are never sent to us. So a refresh does not wipe your work, your draft is saved on your own device only, in your browser storage, and you can clear it at any time with the Clear button.
How long should a cover letter be?
One page, three or four short paragraphs. Open by naming the role and why you are interested, use the middle to match your experience to what the job needs, and close by asking for an interview. If in doubt, shorter is better.
What should I do if I do not know the hiring manager's name?
It is fine to address it to "The Hiring Manager" or "Dear Hiring Team". If the job ad names a contact, use their name. Avoid "To Whom It May Concern", which reads as dated in Australia.
Should I send my cover letter as Word or PDF?
Follow the job ad. If it does not say, PDF is a safe default because the formatting will not shift on someone else's computer. Some recruiters and agencies ask for Word, which is why both are offered here.
Can I use this with the resume builder?
Yes, and it is a good idea to send a matching pair. Build your resume with our free resume builder, then write a cover letter here that points to the one or two things on your resume most relevant to the job.
