Subject: Annual leave request

Hi Jess,

I'd like to request annual leave from Monday 5 January to Friday 16 January. It's for a family trip overseas. I'd be back at work on Monday 19 January.

To keep things running, I'll finish the monthly report before I go and Alex can cover urgent requests.

Please let me know if those dates work, or if you'd like to discuss. Once you're happy with it, I'll submit it through the usual leave process.

Thanks,
Sam

Chat message · Unpaid leave

Hi Jess, could I please take unpaid leave on Friday 30 May? Let me know if those dates suit. Thanks, Sam

Frequently asked questions

How much annual leave do I get in Australia?

Full-time and part-time employees get 4 weeks of paid annual leave a year, based on their ordinary hours (part-time is worked out pro rata). Casual employees don't get paid annual leave. Source: Fair Work Ombudsman, checked 26 October 2026.

Can my employer refuse my annual leave request?

The Fair Work Ombudsman says an employer can only refuse an annual leave request if the refusal is reasonable. You do need to ask before taking it, and your award, agreement, policy or contract may set out how.

How far in advance should I ask?

As early as you can, especially for longer breaks or busy periods. Check your workplace policy, which may set a minimum notice period.

Where does long service leave come from?

Long service leave usually comes from state or territory laws (or sometimes an award or agreement), so how much you get and when depends on where you work. Check the Fair Work Ombudsman's long service leave page or your state's information.
