To whom it may concern,
I am pleased to provide this reference for Sam Taylor. Sam worked at XXXX Retail as a Sales Assistant for two years. I worked closely with them during that time.
I have found Sam to be reliable, friendly with customers and calm under pressure. For example, they trained four new team members during our busiest season.
I understand Sam is applying for a team leader role, and I believe they would be a great fit. I would recommend Sam to any employer without hesitation.
Please feel free to contact me on 0491 570 156 if you would like to discuss this reference further.
Yours sincerely,

Frequently asked questions
What should a reference letter include?
How you know the person and for how long, their role, two or three genuine strengths, a short specific example, and a clear recommendation. Finish with your contact details and sign with your name and title.
What is a character reference?
A character reference is written by someone who knows you personally, such as a coach, teacher, volunteer coordinator or community leader, rather than an employer. It is useful for first jobs or when you have little work history. Avoid using family members.
Can I write my own reference letter for my referee to sign?
Some referees ask you to draft it to save them time. That is fine as long as they read it, change anything that is not accurate, and are genuinely happy to sign it. A reference must reflect the referee's real experience of you.
Do Australian employers still use written references?
Many employers prefer to call or email your referees directly, so a phone or online reference check is more common than a letter. A written reference is still useful for casual work, volunteering, overseas applications and when a referee may be hard to reach.
Is anything stored?
No. Your details are sent to our server only to build the letter on this page, then discarded. Nothing is saved and there's no sign-up.
