Subject: Request for a pay review

Hi Jess,

Thank you for your support in my role. I'd like to ask for a review of my pay because my role has grown and I've taken on extra responsibilities.

Over the past year I've trained three new starters and taken over the weekly roster.

Based on this, I'd like to ask for $78,000 a year.

Could we find a time to talk about this? I'm happy to answer any questions or provide more detail.

Kind regards,
Sam

Hi Jess, could we find a time in the next week or two to talk about my pay? I'd like to discuss it because I've been consistently delivering strong results in my role. Happy to fit in with you. Thanks, Sam

Frequently asked questions

How do I ask my boss for a pay rise?

Ask for a short meeting first, then make your case in person: what you've achieved, how your role has grown, and what similar roles pay. Say what you're asking for, then listen. Follow up in writing afterwards so there's a record. See our guide on how to ask for a pay rise for a full plan.

Should I ask for a pay rise by email?

Email is a good way to ask for the meeting and to follow up, because it gives your manager the details in writing. The conversation itself usually goes better in person or on a call.

How much of a pay rise should I ask for?

There's no set amount. Base it on what similar roles pay (check job ads and award pay guides) and on how much your role has changed. Asking for a specific figure or percentage is clearer than asking for "more".

Is a pay rise the same as the annual award increase?

No. If you're paid under an award, minimum rates usually rise each year after the Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review. That's a legal minimum, not a pay rise you negotiate. You can check your minimum rate with the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay Calculator.

No. Your details are sent to our server only to build the message on this page, then discarded. Nothing is saved and there's no sign-up.
