Text · Confirm · Ask about pay

Hi Tom, it's Mia. Thanks for offering me a trial shift with The Corner Café. I can confirm I'll be there on Saturday at 9am. Is there anything I should wear or bring? Could you also let me know how long the trial will be, and whether it's paid? See you then, Mia

Text · Thank you

Hi Tom, it's Mia. Thanks for having me in for a trial shift today. I really enjoyed learning the coffee machine. I'd love to join the team, and I'm happy to answer any questions. Thanks again, Mia

Frequently asked questions

Should a trial shift be paid in Australia?

Usually, yes. The Fair Work Ombudsman says an unpaid trial may be unlawful if it goes longer than needed to show the skills for the job (which could be an hour up to one shift), involves more than demonstrating those skills, or isn't directly supervised. Time beyond that must be paid at the minimum rate. See our trial shift guide for the details and official links.

Is it okay to ask if the trial shift is paid?

Yes. It's a normal, reasonable question, and asking politely when you confirm the details avoids confusion later. Turn on "Ask about hours and pay" to include it.

Should I send a thank-you after a trial shift?

Yes. A short text or email the same day shows you're keen and helps you stand out from others trialled for the same role.

How long should I wait before following up?

If they gave you a timeframe, wait until it has passed. If not, two to four business days is reasonable for casual and part-time roles.

Is anything stored?

No. Your details are sent to our server only to build the message on this page, then discarded. Nothing is saved and there's no sign-up.
